Answer: Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar (26 September 1820 – 29 July 1891) was an Indian educator, social reformer, and author. He is considered the father of Bengali prose.

He was a Sanskrit scholar. The ‘Sanskrit College’ in Calcutta, where he studied, gave him the honourable title ‘Vidyasagar’ (‘Ocean of Knowledge’; from Sanskrit, Vidya’ knowledge’ and Sagar’ ocean’).

Vidyasagar championed the upliftment of the status of women in India. He was the most prominent campaigner for Hindu widow remarriage, and it was because of his efforts that Hindu Widows’ Remarriage Act was passed in 1856. He opposed child marriage and polygamy and did much to promote the education of girls.

Vidyasagar devoted most of his time in writing reformist literature and books. His work on social reforms includes
1. ‘Bidhobabivah’ on widow’s right to remarry (1855),
2. ‘Bahubivah’ on banning of polygamy (1871) and
3. ‘Balyabivah’ on the flaws of child marriage (publication date not known).

The Hindu Widows’ Remarriage Act 1856 (Act XV, 1856), passed on 16 July 1856, legalised widows’ remarriage in all jurisdictions under East India Company rule. The act was enacted on 26 July 1856. It was drafted by Lord Dalhousie and passed by Lord Canning before the revolt of 1857.
