The painting’s subject, Bani Thani, originally named Vishnupriya, was a singer and poet in Kishangarh in the time of King Sawant Singh (1748-1764), who who later became the ruler’s wife. This painting is often compared to the popular painting of Mona Lisa and is referred as ‘The Indian Mona Lisa’.

Kishangarh, the 18th-century school of the Rajasthani style of Indian painting that arose in the princely state of Kishangarh (central Rajasthan state), is widely held among the most stylised of all Rajasthani miniatures.

Kishangarh paintings are distinguished by their exquisite sophistication, religious intensity and distinct facial type exemplified by arched eyebrows, lotus petal-shaped eyes slightly tinged with pink, drooping eyelids, a sharp, slender nose and thin lips.

‘Krishna Lila’ and ‘Radha Krishna’ themes were the personal favourites of the rulers of Kishangarh and represented a significant portion of the Kishangarh School of Art.
