Sardar Vallabbhai Patel led the Bardoli Satyagraha (1928) for the farmers of Bardoli (a taluq in Surat district of Gujarat) against the unjust raising of taxes.
It was a significant civil disobedience event and played a vital role in the Indian independence struggle as it paved the way for the Civil Disobedience Movement of 1930.
Bardoli Satyagraha’s success gave rise to Patel becoming one of the prominent leaders of the independence movement. And it was after the success of this movement the farmers of Bardoli conferred the title of ‘Sardar’ to him.
